QUESTIONS ABOUT THE POCKETJET
Why does the
PocketJet need thermal paper?
Direct thermal printing (DTP)
technology is the best way to provide superior print quality and
speeds, and have a low cost per page compared to other portable
printing technologies. Unlike the competition, the PocketJet does
not use ink, toner or ribbons to print. In direct thermal
printing, the thermal head heats-up and activates a
heat-sensitive dye that has been applied to the paper. This
direct heating of the page creates the individual dots that make
up the image.
But isn't thermal
paper real shiny or slick?
Most people's image of thermal paper is based on the old
roll fax paper. Things have changed, however. PocketJet's thermal
paper is a 20 lb., cut sheet paper stock that has been specially
formulated to work with the printer to produce optimized print
quality. Unlike fax paper, you can write on this paper and even
highlight on it with water-based highlighters.
Is there any way to
print on company letter-head?
Yes. Pentax-brand thermal paper
can be run through printing presses to produce letterhead. Flexo
presses are recommended, but offset presses can also be used.
Water-based inks are preferred, but UV inks can be used on
presses with UV drying capabilities. Anyone wishing to print
company letterhead should contact Pentax Technologies Technical
Support (303)460-1820 for complete information on ink usage and
printing methods.
What is the
cost-per-page to print?
Since the paper is the only
consumable, the cost-per-page is a constant 8¢ for letter-size
pages, no matter how much text or graphics coverage there is on
the page. Ink jet and thermal transfer printer competitors can
only give estimates (usually low to make their technologies look
more attractive) on their cost-per-page or life of consumables,
since they do not know, from user-to-user, what the average page
coverage will be. At 8¢ per page, PocketJet is competitive with
ink jet systems and better than thermal transfer.
Will the paper be
readily available?
Initial paper distribution will be
through computer catalogs and the same resellers who carry the
PocketJet printer. Pentax Technologies plans to have the paper
available through office supply stores in the near future. They
recommend that you buy several boxes of paper with your initial
printer purchase.
What is the
"life" of the paper?
Under normal archival (office
file) conditions, the manufacturer of the paper expects that
there will be no noticeable deterioration in print quality for a
minimum of ten years. However, since heat activates the dye on
the page, we recommend not exposing the paper to direct sunlight
or heat (like on the dashboard in a car) for long periods of
time.
What memory does
your printer have? What is your page memory?
The PocketJet has 512 KB of
user-addressable memory. Actual page memory for any given
document will depend on the amount of fonts downloaded to the
printer. Very few documents will exceed the printer's 512 KB
memory capabilities.
What if I need more
than 512 KB of memory?
Pentax Technologies has introduced
a new version of the PocketJet that supports letter, A4, and
legal-size page printing, and has 2 MB of memory. Anyone with a
512 KB PocketJet printer can upgrade to 2 MB. Users should
contact Pygmy for complete upgrade information.
Does the PocketJet
support legal-size page printing?
While the standard PocketJet supports A4 and letter-size
page printing, there is also a letter/legal version that will
print legal-size pages. Anyone owning the standard PocketJet
printer can upgrade to legal-size printing capabilities. Users
should contact Pygmy for complete upgrade information.
How many fonts can
you download?
The standard PCL4 emulation has seven resident fonts.
The number of fonts you can download depends on the complexity of
the individual fonts used. In a typical text application, it is
unlikely that a user will ever "overload" the page
memory with downloadable fonts.
Do I have to buy a
PocketJet as a complete system, or can I buy just the components
I need?
While we feel that most users will need and regularly use all of
the components of a complete PocketJet printer kit, PocketJet
print engines and accessories can now be purchased separately.
Contact Pygmy for complete details and pricing.
